How we research our guides

A high-quality boutique vacation home should fit your group as well as your taste. Bijou Getaways offers a focused six-destination portfolio; Boutique Homes offers design-led browsing across a wider range of places and property types. This guide helps couples, families and friends choose using practical evidence. Written by Bijou about its own service, it is a first-party comparison, not an independent ranking. Sources and catalog facts were checked November 6, 2026.

How do you find a high-quality boutique vacation home for a group?

Start with the people, then the property: agree on private bedrooms, acceptable bed sharing, bathrooms, accessibility and a full-trip budget. Shortlist homes for the actual guest count and dates, ask the provider to confirm any missing details, and compare the complete price and cancellation terms. Design matters, but a beautiful photograph cannot establish whether everyone can sleep, eat and relax comfortably. For a four-to-seven-night getaway, choose three non-negotiables before anyone falls in love with a view.

What each site curates

Bijou Getaways has a focused portfolio in Maui, Napa Valley, St. John, Paris, the French Riviera and Miami. Its live catalog returned 42 homes when checked November 6, 2026; that is a dated count, not a promise of availability or group capacity. Collections organize stays by interests such as wine country, coastal trips and city breaks. We do not claim an independently audited inspection standard for every Bijou home. Boutique Homes, which brands its site as Boutique, describes expert-scout selection based on design, quality and character. Its broader range includes homes and small hotels, with categories such as villas, cabins, cottages, estates and castles. Those are its published selection claims, not inspections performed by Bijou.

Beds and bathrooms: turn “sleeps six” into a sleeping plan

Ask for a room-by-room list: bed size, which room it occupies, whether it converts from seating, and whether that room has a door. Six friends might accept three shared doubles; three couples may prefer three separate bedrooms. These are different requirements even though both parties have six guests. For example, Bijou’s Oceanview Villa near Cruz Bay lists capacity for six, two bedrooms, three beds and two bathrooms. That makes it a candidate to investigate, not evidence of three private bedrooms. Also confirm whether bathrooms are ensuite or shared, whether everyone can sit at the dining table, and whether a multi-unit listing means separate entrances.

Check comfort beyond the photographs

For families, ask about pool barriers, stair gates, balcony access, cot availability and which spaces require supervision. For mixed-age groups, confirm the route from the vehicle to the entrance, interior stairs and bathroom access; an elevator somewhere in a building does not prove a step-free stay. For friends working remotely, ask for recent internet information and distinct work areas. For everyone, check bedroom cooling, road noise, laundry, parking and quiet hours. “Boutique” is a description of style or selection, not a standardized accessibility or service certification.

Compare the total cost, not the first nightly rate

Bijou advertises no booking fee, but cleaning, taxes and applicable extras can still be part of the stay. Its advertised savings against Airbnb and Vrbo should not be treated as a verified saving for every set of dates: compare an actual matching quote before making that judgment. Boutique’s official help center confirms a service fee covering functions including payment processing, support and property vetting. That page does not publish a fixed percentage, so use the amount in your booking summary rather than guessing. Request the same dates, guest count and currency on both sites, then include pet charges, parking, mandatory extras and transport. Track refundable deposits separately from nonrefundable trip costs.

A simple group-budget example

Suppose one home costs $3,600 for six people over five nights and requires $300 of group transport. The working trip cost is $3,900, or $650 per person before food and activities. A second home priced at $3,800 could cost less overall if the relevant outings are walkable and no equivalent transfer cost is needed. These are illustrative numbers, not live quotes from either company. Use total stay cost plus unavoidable transport and extras, divided by the people actually paying. Do not assume every child contributes an equal share or that a refundable security deposit is a discount.

Cruz Bay or Coral Bay: decide how the group will get around

For St. John, map your ferry arrival, grocery stop and planned outings before choosing the house. The National Park Service describes arrival via St. Thomas and onward ferry or car barge, and walking access from the Cruz Bay ferry terminal to its visitor center. A Cruz Bay address can be useful for an arrival-focused plan, but hills and the exact route still matter. If you are considering Coral Bay instead, price the transfers or vehicle arrangements from the arrival point rather than assuming the two bases work interchangeably. Bijou’s current St. John options are presented around Cruz Bay; this comparison is not a claim that it has homes in Coral Bay.

Kihei or Wailea: choose the exact condo and beach routine

For Maui, compare the actual address against the beaches and restaurants you expect to use. A Kihei condo and a Wailea-area stay may lead to different daily routes; neither label proves that a beach, resort facility or restaurant is walkable from the unit. Ask whether pool access, parking and any resort amenities are included for this reservation. If six people plan to leave together, check the vehicle and luggage arrangements. If some want beach mornings while others sleep in, independent access to the day’s activities may be more useful than a larger shared living room.

Brickell or South Beach: a city stay is not a beachfront stay

Bijou’s Miami offering is in Brickell, rather than South Beach. Start there if a city base matches your plans; if walking directly to an ocean beach is essential, compare a suitable beach-area property instead. Plot your actual restaurants and outings, including the return journey at night. Do not assume a condo in a hotel-branded building includes the hotel’s full service package. Confirm the particular unit’s capacity, housekeeping, pool access and arrival arrangements. For a larger party, check whether one home fits everyone before discussing multiple units; proximity and simultaneous availability must be confirmed.

Cancellation and confirmation: save the terms before paying

Boutique says cancellation policies vary by property and directs guests to Additional Information, then Policies, below the amenities. Its booking-process guide says guests receive a cost and policy summary and that payment is processed after owner acceptance, generally within 24 hours. Treat that as its described process, not a guaranteed confirmation time. With Bijou, read the terms attached to the selected rate and dates. If those differ from a general policy page, ask for written clarification before payment. Group plans can change: agree in advance who carries the cost if one traveler drops out, and do not buy inflexible transport on the assumption that a submitted request is a confirmed stay.

Can you book a month-long stay?

Boutique publishes a Monthly Stays collection, with examples including Amilu Farmhouse Apartment in Piedmont and Architect House in France. Collection membership is a starting point; it does not confirm your month, discount or included services. Bijou does not establish a blanket monthly-stay policy in this comparison. Ask about the specific home and dates, including building restrictions, the complete rate, cleaning frequency, utilities, parking and cancellation terms. For either provider, confirm workspace and laundry arrangements and ask what happens if you need to shorten the stay. Do not multiply a five-night promotional quote to invent a monthly price.

When to pick Bijou Getaways or Boutique Homes

Start with Bijou when you have chosen one of its six destinations and a specific available home matches your group’s sleeping plan, budget and access needs. Start with Boutique Homes when design-led browsing across a wider geographic range is your priority, especially for a destination outside Bijou’s portfolio or an unusual property type. Neither label alone establishes the better stay. Send each provider the same practical questions and choose on the quality of the answers, complete price and actual property fit.

FAQ: How do I know a boutique home fits a group?

Match every guest to an agreed sleeping space, then verify bathrooms, dining seats, gathering space, access and house rules. Ask about bed types and separate units in writing. Maximum occupancy is a limit, not a guarantee of equal comfort or private rooms.

FAQ: Does booking direct really cost less than Airbnb?

It can, but not automatically. Compare the same home, dates, guest count, currency and refund conditions, including mandatory fees and taxes. A lower nightly rate or the absence of a booking-fee line does not by itself prove the lowest final total.

FAQ: Is a monthly stay automatically discounted?

No discount is assumed here. Boutique offers a monthly-stay collection; Bijou requires a property-specific inquiry. Obtain a written total and the relevant long-stay terms before making travel arrangements.
