St. John Arrival and Departure: A Practical Transfer Checklist
Plan your St. John transfer with realistic buffers, clear ferry and pickup arrangements, luggage planning and a simple arrival evening.

A St. John holiday starts more smoothly when the transfer is treated as part of the journey. Instead of choosing the tightest possible connection, organize a sequence you can follow when tired: arrival, onward transport, crossing, local pickup and accommodation access.
The operator checklist to save on your phone
Use St. John Ferry Ticketing to identify your actual passenger route. Save the departure terminal, travel date, baggage rules and last practical crossing. If collecting from St. John Car Rental, agree on pickup and what happens after a flight delay. Make The Banana Deck an optional first meal only once the crossing and accommodation access are settled.
Work backward on departure: airline check-in requirement, St. Thomas ground transfer, ferry crossing, ferry check-in and the drive from your property. Confirm each stage directly. Never use a restaurant opening time or an assumed late checkout as your luggage-storage plan.
Specific places to book or visit

St. Thomas–St. John
Use the operator’s actual route and date when planning your crossing. Red Hook–Cruz Bay and Charlotte Amalie–Cruz Bay are different services; check baggage charges and schedules separately.

Compare rental availability before building an island-wide itinerary. Ask about pickup, return time, parking, vehicle suitability and the total rental terms. A reservation does not establish that every driveway is suitable.

A town meal option with dine-in and takeout. Check the current menu before choosing it for a group with dietary requirements; confirm service on your travel date.
Confirm the whole chain
Before departure, write down each stage, its operator and its pickup point. If your journey involves St. Thomas, verify the appropriate transfer and ferry arrangements directly with the operators for your travel date. Passenger transport and vehicle transport are different decisions. Do not assume a ticket for one service covers another part of the journey.
Allow for luggage and delays
Your aircraft’s scheduled arrival is not the time you will be standing at the next pickup point. Leave space for baggage, traffic and finding the right departure location. Families should plan for food and bathroom breaks too. If you are considering a late arrival, ask what happens if you miss the final practical connection before committing to it.
Make the last mile explicit
Send your expected arrival window to your host and save the entry instructions offline. Confirm whether you are collecting a vehicle, meeting a driver or arranging a taxi. Have the property address and a working contact number available. A property name alone may not be enough for a driver to identify the correct entrance.
Plan departure backward
Start with the airline’s recommended airport arrival time, then add every transfer stage and a sensible buffer. Confirm return arrangements the day before. Keep keys, travel documents and essential medication separate from packed bags. Arrange luggage storage if needed; it should not depend on an unconfirmed late checkout or a business being open when you arrive.
Your planning shortcut
| Situation | Suggested plan | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Before leaving home | Save every pickup address and contact | Keep an offline copy of entry instructions. |
| When travel is delayed | Contact the next operator and host | Confirm the revised plan rather than assuming a later service. |
| The day before departure | Reconfirm return transport | Pack documents and essentials separately. |
Before you go
- Save operator contacts and the property address offline.
- Confirm schedules close to travel rather than using an old screenshot.
- Keep the first dinner simple and close to your accommodation.
