Miami Without a Car: A Practical Plan from Brickell
How to plan a car-free Miami stay from Brickell, including Metromover limits, beach transfers and realistic walking days.

A car-free Miami stay is easier when you organize each day around a compact area and budget for the occasional ride. It is less practical when the itinerary requires several distant stops every day. Start with a map of your actual accommodation and work outward.
A car-free plan with honest transport boundaries
Use Museum Park as your first outing: choose Frost Science or PAMM and inspect the Metromover route from your Brickell address. Make ICA Miami a separate Design District trip using an appropriate bus, taxi or rideshare. Save Joe’s Take Away for the day you already cross to South Beach. The free Metromover does not take you to Miami Beach.
Budget for the return transfer as well as the outward trip, especially after dinner. With children, confirm suitable restraints before selecting a car service. Avoid planning several scattered restaurants as though all Miami neighborhoods share the same rail connection.
Specific places to book or visit
Choose the stops that fit your day; this is a shortlist, not a checklist to complete. Links lead to the operators for current menus, tickets and reservations.
Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science ↗
1101 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami
An aquarium and science-focused outing at Museum Park. Review ticket inclusions and planetarium arrangements; allow this to be the main activity rather than the first of several museums.
Pérez Art Museum Miami ↗
Museum Park, Miami
Choose PAMM for modern and contemporary art. It pairs geographically with the waterfront, but visiting neighboring Frost too is optional, not a requirement. Check the museum calendar before booking.
Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami ↗
61 NE 41st Street, Design District
A focused contemporary-art stop with free admission. Reserve ahead because capacity can limit walk-ins. Groups larger than nine need to follow the museum’s group-booking instructions.
Joe’s Take Away ↗
11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach
A more casual alternative to Joe’s main dining room for a South Beach day. Look at the current take-away menu and seasonal availability rather than assuming every seafood item is always offered.
Use local transit for the trips it serves
Miami-Dade’s Metromover is free and serves the Downtown, Brickell and Omni areas. Check its current map and service notices before setting out. Identify both the station near your home and the final walk at the other end. A station on a map is useful only if the whole route works for your group.
Treat the beach as a separate journey
Plan the journey to Miami Beach deliberately, using current transit information or a prearranged ride. Do not expect the Metromover to take you across to the beach. Bring what you need for several hours so you are not returning to the apartment for a towel, charger or change of clothes halfway through the day.
Walk in manageable blocks
Keep your walking ambitions realistic for the weather and for everyone traveling with you. Choose a lunch or indoor stop between outdoor stretches. If you have children, luggage or mobility needs, compare the entire door-to-door trip, including waiting and transfers. A slightly more expensive direct journey may be worth it on arrival or departure day.
Know when a one-day car makes sense
If one day is built around a distant excursion, compare a tour, hired transport and a short car rental. Check parking and pickup arrangements before deciding. You do not need to turn the entire holiday into a driving trip to solve one outing. For the rest of the stay, reduce friction by booking activities in the same area on the same day.
Your planning shortcut
| Situation | Suggested plan | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Local mainland outing | Check Metromover coverage | Confirm service and the final walk. |
| Beach outing | Plan a separate transfer | Bring everything for a longer stay in one area. |
| One distant excursion | Compare a tour or short rental | You may not need a car for the full trip. |
Before you go
- Save an offline address for the return journey.
- Check transit changes on your travel day.
- Include airport and late-evening transport in your budget.
